The world’s largest retail chain Walmart is allegedly preparing to enter the metaverse space with plans to create its own cryptocurrency and NFT collections. CNBC.
According to open dataOn December 30, 2021, the retailer filed seven new trademark applications with the patent office. They indicate the intent to produce and sell virtual goods, including electronics, home decorations, toys, sporting goods and hygiene products.
Separately, the company plans to offer users virtual currency and NFTs.
“They are very pushy. They have a lot of language that shows that there is an extensive discussion going on behind the scenes about how they are going to handle cryptocurrency, the metaverse and the virtual world that seems to be coming, ”said CNBC trademark attorney Josh Gerben.
After Facebook’s name change to Meta and its ambition beyond social media, he said, companies are rushing to figure out how they’ll fit into the virtual space.
Recall that in August 2021, Walmart opened a vacancy for a product manager related to cryptocurrencies.
