Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has said he will protect the first cryptocurrency if he is elected President of the United States in 2024. This is reported The Block.
The Republican politician kicked off the campaign with a Twitter Spaces event featuring Elon Musk. Speaking to 300,000 listeners, he said:
“I think people should be able to deal with bitcoin. As president, I will defend this kind of thing.”
He noted that any regulation ultimately must be considered by Congress, but opposed any ban.
Earlier in May, DeSantis came out in support of decentralized assets, vowing to block the use of any central bank digital currency in Florida. In his criticism of the CBDC, he expressed solidarity with another Republican, Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., who also outlined presidential ambitions.
“I just don’t have the desire to control everything that people can do in this area, and I think that the current regime is clearly poisoning bitcoin, and if this continues for another four years, they will probably end up killing it,” DeSantis said.
In March, Florida’s governor signed legislation to introduce financial literacy programs in high schools, including on issues related to cryptocurrencies.
During a press conference, he said that lawmakers did not support his initiative to allocate funding for “experiments with the blockchain.” At the same time, he expressed skepticism about the CBDC because of the ability of the central government to tightly control the financial freedoms of citizens through the asset.
Recall that the founder of the venture capital company Social Capital, Chamath Palihapitiya, said that the crypto industry in the United States has already “died” due to regulatory policies.
