- The launch of the digital dollar raises concerns even among politicians
- They see a clear threat to citizens
Congressman Tom Emmer gave a vivid assessment of CBDC technology at a presentation at the Cato Institute (Washington). The politician believes that if the US implements CBDC, then ordinary citizens will fall under the total control of the authorities.
Emmer’s logic is simple. Digital dollars are a programmable currency. So, they can be “easily used as a weapon of espionage.” Also, through the CBDC, it will be easy for the authorities to suppress political opponents.
“The federal government is trying to expand financial control. The idea of a central bank digital currency is becoming more and more popular in the institutions of the US government. Moreover, from the point of view of programmable money, which will be controlled by the state. That kind of money can easily be turned into a surveillance tool.”
In his Twitter account, the politician recalled several bills that would prevent total control through the CBDC. Specifically, this is the “CBDC Anti-Spying State Law,” which Emmer proposed at the end of February.
“The future of cryptocurrencies in the US should be determined by Congress and the American people, not by the administration of the state”
Recall that today the US crypto industry received another blow. The New York State Attorney’s Office recognized the ether as a security. She also sued KuCoin for “falsely presenting itself as an exchange.”
