The court sentenced Nicholas Sharp, a former employee of the American IT company Ubiquiti, to 6 years in prison for extorting $2 million in digital assets. press release Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Sharpe was detained in December 2021 on charges of using his official position to steal confidential data from the firm’s clients. Using the information obtained, the scammer sent threatening emails demanding a ransom of 50 BTC.

Upon learning of the incident, Ubiquiti representatives contacted law enforcement agencies. They were able to identify the attacker from the VPN connection. He gave himself away when he connected via a fake IP to his account of the anonymous Surfshark service, which he paid with PayPal.

“Sharp repeatedly abused his administrative access to download gigabytes of sensitive data from an employer. […] He also changed the names of the session files to create the impression that other employees were responsible for his malicious actions, ”the press release says.

Ubiquiti officially disclosed the incident in January 2021, describing it as “unauthorized access to certain information technology systems hosted by a third party cloud provider”.
