The new head of the Pentagon for artificial intelligence, Craig Martell, announced his intention to accelerate the technological modernization of the department. Writes about it Bloomberg.
The first day of work at the Department of Defense was “overwhelming,” he said. The head of the department noted that he did not seek to reform the department as a whole.
“My goal is to demonstrate that with the right cultural change, we can make a really big impact,” Martell said.
He added that criticism from former senior officials was “mostly correct”.
Earlier, a number of senior officials left the Pentagon’s technology department and expressed frustration at the slow pace of change. Some of them cited fears that China’s heavy investment in artificial intelligence could surpass US defense capabilities.
Martell said his office will work on “responsible AI” as well. According to him, the Pentagon needs to have reliable ethical principles for the use of artificial intelligence in war and ensure that the combat vehicles used “will be 99.999% accurate.”
“For me, whenever lives are at stake, people need to be aware,” Martell said.
He also expressed doubts about achieving advanced AI like “Skynet”.
Martell took over as Pentagon chief of artificial intelligence in April 2022.
Recall that in April, the US military requested $ 29.8 million for the development of AI infrastructure.
In February, the US Department of Defense signed contracts with 79 companies for the supply of artificial intelligence technologies.
In October 2021, former Pentagon director of software Nicholas Chaillen claimed that China had won the AI race against the US.
A week later, the Ministry of Defense refuted the opinion of the former employee.
