The Udemy Global Workplace Learning Index for the first quarter of 2023 shows that ChatGPT, financial services and courses aimed at developing the skills of student business educators experienced a significant surge of interest from the site’s 49 million users.
This is probably not surprising as we are currently experiencing what Wired recently described as a “wet hot AI chatbot summer” coming just after the launch of OpenAI ChatGPT.
According to Udemy, theme consumption — the number of users taking courses focused on skills specific to ChatGPT — has grown by 4419%.
Other advanced technical skills of high interest to students include Nutanix, Azure Machine Learning, and Amazon Elastic MapReduce, all cloud-related courses with machine learning applications. Interest in the art of artificial intelligence (AI) has also grown, as has the interest in illustration.
The report also provides a summary of the top three skills by popularity in 15 countries. Despite the rise in theme consumption, ChatGPT has only managed to break into the top three in the US market, where it ranks first. Artificial intelligence topped the list in Argentina and came in second in Canada.
It should also be noted that manufacturing, government and financial services top the list of fast-growing industries, and skills related to them are showing incredible growth.
In addition to the tech industry, the report provides data on skills in the category “professional skills”. Leading in the list of “training”. With a 764% increase in topic attention in Q1 2023, related skills were second only to ChatGPT in terms of consumption.
While the report does not draw any direct conclusions, it does include a quote from instructor Diego Davilla who says:
“A comprehensive understanding of ChatGPT and other emerging AI technologies will be essential to pivot quickly into today’s era of rapid digital transformation.”
Chatbot technologies are already influencing the world of cryptocurrencies, and the emergence of advanced trading bots capable of interacting with third-party plugins built on ChatGPT and similar platforms is becoming increasingly popular.

But the Udemy report also indicates that interest in the technologies behind blockchain development is also on the rise. Python certifications have grown by 272% and FastAPI skill consumption has increased by 102%, both of which are widely used in the development of blockchain technologies.
