UK warns against using emotion recognition systems
UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) warned from using emotion analysis algorithms for anything more serious than “children’s holiday games.”
The technology is still “immature” and the risks associated with it outweigh any potential benefits, said Steven Bonner, deputy chief of the department. He added that incorrect data analysis could lead to discrimination.
Bonner also described attempts to use biometrics to detect emotions as “pseudo-scientific”.
TSMC suspends chip shipments to Chinese AI accelerator maker
TSMC has suspended shipments of 7nm processors to Chinese AI accelerator maker Biren Technology.
According to Bloomberg, the Taiwanese chipmaker took this step because of US sanctions. TSMC does not know if the Chinese company’s products are subject to US restrictions, so they decided to suspend deliveries “just in case.”
Previously, Biren Technology introduced the BR100 accelerator designed for computer vision and natural language processing tasks. Its closest competitor is the Nvidia A100.
Gmail accused of blocking US Republican Party emails
United States Republican Committee (RNC) accused Gmail intentionally putting the party’s emails in the Spam folder. The organization sued the owner of the Google service.
The tech giant says it doesn’t block emails based on political grounds.
According to Google representatives, the spam filters of the mail service are trained on the actions of users who themselves send such letters to spam. Based on this, the system can automatically block RNC broadcasts.
Media: Microsoft will increase investments in OpenAI
Microsoft plans increase investment in the OpenAI AI Lab.
The details of the deal, as well as the amount of financing, have not yet been determined. According to media reports, representatives of both companies have already held several meetings.
The parties did not comment on the information about possible cooperation.
Meta more Excluded in the top 20 largest US companies.
In October 2022, after the publication of a quarterly report, the company’s shares collapsed by 23%. Since September 2021, Meta has lost 74% of its value, or $730 billion.
The company’s core advertising business continues to shrink for the third quarter in a row, experts said. Investors are not sure that the change of focus to the metaverse will change the current situation much.
The crisis in Meta is associated with the macroeconomic situation and the change in Apple’s privacy on iOS. Under the new rules, users can disable the collection of personal data in applications, which affects ad targeting.
Sony introduced a camera with a dedicated AI chip
Sony introduced A7R V camera with a dedicated AI processor for object identification and tracking.

The device is equipped with a 61-megapixel sensor. The AI chip allows autofocus to detect and distinguish between objects like cars, trains, planes, animals and insects. The A7R V can also estimate a person’s poses from 20 key points on the body and predict the position of the eyes.
The novelty will go on sale in mid-December 2022. The cost of the device is $3899.
Mobileye goes public
Intel spent IPO for Mobileye’s drone development division.
On the first day of trading, the company’s shares rose in price by 37%. The capitalization of the company increased from $17 billion to $23 billion.
Intel retained a majority stake in Mobileye and retained Amnon Shashua as CEO.
Neuralink postponed the presentation to November 30
Elon Musk has postponed the Neuralink presentation to November 30, 2022.
The event was originally scheduled to take place on October 31st. Musk did not explain the reason for the transfer.
The last time Neuralink demonstrated its developments was in April 2021. Then the company showed a monkey playing ping-pong with the power of thought.
Labels are worried about the popularity of AI music services
Record labels expressed concern about the proliferation of music generation algorithms.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) believes that artificial intelligence threatens not only labels, but also artists. According to the organization, such algorithms are trained on data that can be copyrighted.
The RIAA also said that AI services like Acapella-extractor and Remove-Vocals allow the creation of unauthorized copies of musical compositions.
Dating site opens access to AI nudity detector
Bumble dating service opened source code for an AI tool that helps detect obscene images.
Private Detector blurs nudity, giving the user the choice of whether to open the photo. According to the developers, the accuracy of the tool is 98%.
The source code for the project is available at GitHub. Bumble believes that the tool will allow small companies to integrate Private Detector into their services and protect users from inappropriate content.
Engineers have created a sweater that deceives human recognition systems
University of Maryland researchers created a sweater that hides people from recognition systems.
The developers exploited the vulnerability of algorithms trained to identify specific items. With the help of a large data set, they generated a pattern with the image of people and changed it until the computer vision system ceased to “recognize” the person. Then they put the final print on a regular sweater.
As a result, the recognition system was unable to identify a person who fell into the camera’s field of view.
The most important AI deals of the last week
From October 23 to October 29, 2022, artificial intelligence startups raised over $150 million. Here are the most interesting transactions.
- Developer of technology for stores without checkouts Trigo attracted $100 million
- AI Chip Manufacturer Axelera AI received $27 million to commercialize their equipment.
