In February 2020, the head of PayPal, Dan Shulman, announced his intention to turn the mobile application of the payment system into a superapp (SuperApp): add a messaging option and “additional cryptocurrency opportunities” to it.

About what super applications are and why users need them, the superapp team tells SAVL…

From apps to superapps

In 2009 Apple launched iPhone advertising campaign under the slogan “There’s An App For That”. Thus, the company informed users that by the time the phone was released in the App Store, a large number of applications had appeared for various needs.

However, in 2010, Research In Motion founder Mike Lazaridis predicted combining applications into closed ecosystems with a “holistic user experience”. He called such ecosystems superapps.

The trend to create superapps emerged after the app boom in 2013-2016.

Anna Mikhina, Vice President for the Development of Tinkoff Lifestyle Services considersthat these changes are associated, among other things, with the high cost of creating mono services:

“It is expensive for a business to have multiple applications. We need separate budgets for attracting new users, separate development teams. There are also areas with low frequency of use, which are more logical to add a button to the main application. Now applications are beginning to accumulate consonant services inside themselves, so that the user does not go somewhere else. “

The idea of combining several applications into one has become especially popular against the backdrop of the success of the WeСhat superappa from the Chinese company Tencent.

The WeChat ecosystem includes a messenger, payment system, games, as well as services for calling a taxi, ordering food and buying movie tickets. As of the second quarter of 2021, the number of its users is 1.2 billion…

The article When One App Rules Them All Connie Chan, partner at venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, notes that a key component of WeChat’s success has been expanding beyond the social network.

On social networks like Facebook, content is central: users leave likes and comments on brand pages. Tencent has shifted its focus from social interaction to functionality: ecosystem members can communicate and order goods in a single app.

The evolution of superapps

Visa Vice President for Innovation and Design Akshay Chopra surethat superapps will gradually move away from WeChat’s all-in-one approach and start providing services in a specific niche:

“It’s unlikely that people will want to access TikTok in a banking app. For financial products like cards, loans and insurance, they will most likely go to a bank, not a social network, ”he says.…

So, the SAVL developers have chosen the niche of mobile cryptocurrency applications. Superapp includes:

  • P2P platform for cryptocurrency trading;
  • multicurrency crypto wallet with support for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, Litecoin, XRP and ERC-20 tokens;
  • a messenger with end-to-end encryption for communication and discussion of transactions;
  • cryptocurrency news aggregator.

At the same time, the project team notes that it does not seek to integrate all possible services into SAVL:

“We have created a platform for solving everyday problems of users – a pocket Swiss bank. They can negotiate terms of deals, buy cryptocurrencies and manage assets – all in one smartphone app. ”

Superapp does not cover the needs of some market participants such as miners and professional traders. However, it saves users from having to create multiple cryptocurrency wallets and register on different trading platforms.

conclusions

Suprapps are changing and are no longer WeChat-like monsters that strive to accommodate all possible functions in one application. They increasingly provide users with interrelated services in a specific area.

The SAVL team is creating a mobile application that will make working with cryptocurrencies easier and more accessible. Developers do not overload it with services that are more appropriate to use on computers with multiple monitors.
