Samsung has banned employees from using generative AI tools like ChatGPT for fear of leaking sensitive data. Writes about it Bloomberg.
Management notified employees of one of the largest divisions of the new policy in a memo. The company is concerned that the data transmitted to AI platforms is stored on external servers.
This makes it difficult to extract and remove them. Also, classified information may fall into the hands of third parties, the document says.
A Samsung spokesperson confirmed the ban on the use of AI chatbots.
“Attention for generative AI platforms like ChatGPT is growing both internally and externally. […] While this interest is focused on utility and efficiency, there is also increasing concern about security risks.
Samsung’s new rules prohibit the use of generative AI systems on company-owned computers, tablets, and phones, as well as on internal networks. Management asked employees who use ChatGPT and other tools on personal devices not to provide any corporate information or data that reveals the company’s intellectual property.
Violation of the new policy may result in layoffs.
“We ask you to strictly follow our safety rules, […] Failure to do so may result in compromise of company information, leading to disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment,” Samsung said in a memo.
At the same time, the corporation creates its own artificial intelligence tools for working with internal documentation and program code. Samsung is also working on methods to block sensitive company information from being uploaded to external services.
“Headquarters is reviewing security measures […]. However, until they are ready, we are temporarily limiting the use of generative AI, ”the document says.
Recall that in April, the media reported that Samsung employees disclosed secret information to ChatGPT at least three times. The leak occurred shortly after the ban on the use of the chatbot was lifted.
