Darren Hick, a teacher from Furman University (USA), said that his student used the ChatGPT neural network to fake an essay.
According to the professor, one of his students wrote a work about the paradox of horror by the philosopher David Hume, but the text contained many errors. Hick suspected fraud on the part of the student and checked the essay with another tool.
“The first indicator that I am dealing with AI is the meaninglessness of the text. The essay confidently and impeccably described Hume’s views on the paradox of horror in such a way that they were all completely wrong, ”Hick wrote.
It turned out that she used ChatGPT in writing the paper:
“Any arbitrary piece of this text [инструмент] flagged as fake with 99.9% accuracy, while the work of other students turned out to be 99.9% real.
Hick also noted some structural features of the texts that betray the “handwriting” of ChatGPT. According to him, such works are easy to distinguish even with the naked eye. However, he believes that in the future it will be more and more difficult to recognize fakes.
“In my case, a student admitted that she used ChatGPT, but if she had not, I would hardly have had enough evidence. It’s too new [технология]’ said the professor.
He urged educational institutions to immediately develop standards to combat this kind of fraud.
Recall that in December, OpenAI introduced a chat bot with artificial intelligence ChatGPT.
In October, Reddit users shared stories of how they used language models to write academic papers.
In July, GPT-3 wrote a paper about herself.
