Oracle has launched a review of TikTok content moderation algorithms and models for manipulation by the Chinese authorities. Writes about it Axios.
According to the report, Oracle wants to make sure that the display of content on TikTok “meets expectations” of users and that the recommendation algorithms are not manipulated. Also, the video service will regularly check moderation methods, including automated and manual systems.
TikTok confirmed the information from the Axios report.
Content moderation on the site has been controversial over the past few years. In 2019 The Washington Post informedthat the Beijing office often ordered US employees to restrict certain videos.
In the same year, The Guardian published part of ByteDance’s internal documents. According to them, Beijing required moderators to censor videos that mention Tiananmen Square, Tibetan independence, the banned religious group Falun Gong, and other sensitive topics.
In 2020 The Intercept informedthat TikTok moderators have been ordered to censor live political speech. They were also ordered to block the messages of “unwanted users” – unattractive, poor or people with disabilities.
ByteDance denied all allegations and stated that the American moderators did not receive such instructions.
However, a BuzzFeed News investigation from June 2022 proved TikTok’s close relationship with the Beijing authorities. Journalists found that the data of US citizens were repeatedly accessed by employees in China.
After this TikTok announced on the transfer of all traffic in the United States to the infrastructure of the Oracle cloud service. According to representatives of the video service, this will protect the data of American users from “prying eyes”.
Former US President Donald Trump’s administration tried force ByteDance to sell TikTok to an American company. Otherwise, the platform could be blocked in the United States.
ByteDance agreed sell the US portion of the Oracle business. The companies have previously agreed on the terms of the deal, but in February 2021 it broke.
Recall that in July 2020, the Anonymous hacker group accused TikTok of mass surveillance of users and transferring data to the Chinese authorities.
