Media: OpenAI losses reached $540 million in 2022

In 2022, OpenAI suffered a loss of $540 million due to the development of ChatGPT.

According to The Informationthe main share of the company’s expenses falls on providing the “serious” computing power necessary to generate chatbot responses to user requests.

Despite Microsoft’s financial backing, the growing demand for ChatGPT will push AI lab costs further.

According to the publication, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman “privately suggested” that the company will try to raise about $100 billion in the coming years as it works on artificial general intelligence.

Elon Musk Announces Free FSD Trial

Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised to give users in North America a free trial of FSD when the technology becomes “super-reliable, not just secure.”

Once FSD is super smooth (not just safe), we will roll out a free month trial for all cars in North America.

Then extend to the rest of the world after we ensure it works well on local roads and regulators approve it in that country.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 8, 2023

According to the billionaire, it will later be distributed around the world, when they are convinced that the autonomous driving system can work on local roads and its use is approved by the country’s regulatory authorities.

Musk also spoke about the possibilities of the next FSD update. He stated that software version 11.4 could be considered 12.0 due to many significant improvements.

Arguably, v11.4 should be v12.0, as there are so many major improvements.

v12 is reserved for when FSD is end-to-end AI, from images in to steering, brakes & acceleration out.

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 7, 2023

According to the head of Tesla, FSD 12 will have “end-to-end AI” – from images to steering, brakes and acceleration.

China arrests creator of fake news created with ChatGPT

Chinese police have arrested a man who allegedly created fake news about a train derailment on April 25, 2023 using ChatGPT.

According to SCMP, Hong, who was detained, allegedly uploaded several popular stories to a chatbot and created different versions of the article. He then posted “fake” news through over 20 accounts on the Baijiahao platform.

Police said the suspect allegedly owns a company that runs several blogs. He used “false articles” to get about 15,000 clicks, the police added.

Also, according to the police, the detainee admitted to bypassing the restrictions of the service to distribute the same content from multiple accounts.

Hong is suspected of “starting quarrels and causing trouble”, which is a political offense and carries a prison sentence of 5-10 years.

Clearview AI fined again in France

France fined Clearview AI for ignoring previous regulatory requirements related to violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

In October 2022, the National Commission for Informatics and Freedoms (CNIL) decided to recover 20 million euros from the startup. The department also ordered the company to stop collecting and processing citizens’ data.

In case of non-compliance with the order within two months, the regulator promised to fine Clearview AI 100,000 euros for each day of delay.

According to CNIL, the company did not send evidence of compliance with the requirements. In this regard, the regulator imposed a penalty in the amount of 5.2 million euros.

The PR agency of the startup LAKPR Group responded that Clearview AI does not have a representative office and clients in France or the EU, and therefore its activities are not subject to the GDPR.

Company Meta introduced the first open source ImageBind AI model capable of handling six types of data. You can test the operation of the system on website project.

The algorithm combines text, images and video, audio, depth information, temperature information, and motion readings generated by inertial measurement devices.

According to the company, the model is a research project with no consumer or practical application. However, the technology opens up new opportunities for developers of generative AI.

Meta noted that future algorithms will be able to process a different stream of sensory information, including touch, speech, smell, and fMRI brain signals. This will enable the creation of more complete human-centric AI models, the company added.

Wendy’s automates car ordering with AI

Fast food restaurant chain Wendy’s and Google created chatbot for processing customer orders on cars.

The system is based on a large language model developed by the tech giant’s engineers. It can recognize words, names, and abbreviations unique to Wendy’s locations. Also, the bot was taught to understand various dialects and accents, “without being distracted” by background noise.

In addition, the developers added generative AI to minimize the “rigidity and roboticity” of the system when interacting with people.

In June 2023, Wendy’s will test the technology in a restaurant in Columbus (Ohio, USA).

AI learned to examine bacteria without prior knowledge

Researchers at the University of Michigan developed AI platform BacterAI capable of studying bacteria without prior knowledge.

The system creates a data set by conducting experiments with the help of laboratory robots. The devices are started one by one, passing the results from the previous one to the next one. The platform then transforms the findings into a set of logical rules that researchers can test and use.

The BacterAI test sought to understand the metabolism of two common oral bacteria. The task included identifying a specific set of 20 amino acids (AMAs) required to sustain the life of these microorganisms.

As a result, the AI tested several hundred combinations of AMK daily. He chose the most promising combinations and observed them in subsequent tests.

According to scientists, BacterAI conducted up to 10,000 experiments in 24 hours. After nine days, the system was able to accurately predict amino acid profiles for each bacterial species 90% of the time.

The algorithm was taught to see objects out of sight

Researchers from MIT and Rice University developed ORCa machine learning technique that can see objects out of view.

The system analyzes distorted reflections on glossy surfaces to determine objects and their distance. For example, using this technology, robocars can detect approaching vehicles at an intersection by the reflections on other cars.

The software processes several images of a glossy surface from different angles. Then, using machine learning, it breaks down the reflection of the object into individual pixels. Analyzing their changes relative to each other in different pictures, ORCa is able to determine the shape of the object.

Also, by modeling the scene as a so-called 5D radiation field, the technology estimates the direction and intensity of the light rays falling or reflecting from each point. This allows ORCa to determine how far they are from the reflective surface and from each other.

UK uses AI to detect drivers littering roadsides

In Great Britain deployed traffic AI cameras to detect drivers who throw trash out of car windows.

When violators are detected, the devices will automatically send data to police dispatchers. Staff will be able to review the records and issue a fine of up to $126 to the driver based on the license plate of the car.

In the coming weeks, the technology will be launched in test mode in the south-east of England.

Deepfake songs brought fraudster $10,000

Scammer earned nearly $10,000 in sales of AI-generated tracks featuring Frank Ocean’s deepfake voice.

Discord user mourningassasin hired the musician to create “about nine” fake songs. He trained the AI on “very high quality vocals” from Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You”.

mourningassasin then posted a snippet of one of the fake songs on a music forum with “leaked” pieces. He “instantly noticed that everyone believed” the song’s originality.

According to the scammer, several people wrote to him and offered to pay “a lot of money” for the tracks. In mid to late April 2023, mourningassasin reportedly received $3,000-4,000 for each song.

Later he was banned from the forum. The owner of the Discord server, where the scammer distributed Ocean’s deepfake songs, said that the situation has seriously undermined the trust in the community. It will also make every new and unverified music seller suspicious, he added.
