An open-source artificial intelligence (AI) model is reportedly being prepared for public release by OpenAI, the firm behind the ChatGPT AI chatbot.
In a May 16 report by The Information, citing a person familiar with the plan, OpenAI is taking the step as pressure from competing open source AI models, such as the Meta models released in February, mounts.
No release date for the model has been announced.

It has been said that the open-source OpenAI model is likely not to compete with its flagship product ChatGPT, as the firm’s value lies in being able to sell access to its more complex models.
Earlier in May, a leaked document from Google Senior Software Engineer Luke Sernau pointed to open-source AI models as a major threat to the company’s own AI efforts.

Sernau said that while Google has been distracted by competing with OpenAI, open-source AI models have evolved quietly, rapidly, and significantly.
Cointelegraph contacted OpenAI for comment, but did not immediately receive a response.
