Nuclear threat detection and other AI news

We strive to inform readers not only about events in the bitcoin industry, but also to talk about what is happening in related technological areas – cybersecurity and in the world of artificial intelligence (AI).

Cryplogger AI collected the most important news from the world of AI over the past week.

  • Meta has shortened one of the AI commands.
  • Apple will remove the word “Hi” when calling the voice assistant Siri.
  • Waymo has been allowed to charge for drone deliveries in California.
  • AI will help Ukrainians find work.
  • Boston Dynamics celebrated its 30th anniversary and showed the evolution of its robots.
  • Midjourney got a major update and learned how to mix pictures.
  • Scientists have said that artificial intelligence will help in the early detection of nuclear threats.
  • The most important AI deals of the last week.

Meta has fired a team of machine learning researchers in the infrastructure stack.

According to a former employee of the company, there were 50 people in the Probability group, not counting managers. Of these, 19 were in Bayesian modeling, 9 in ranking and recommendation, 5 in technology enhancement, and 17 in AI development for chip and compiler design.

Earlier, Meta announced the layoff of 11,000 workers. After that, the head of the company Mark Zuckerberg hintedthat mass layoffs will not affect employees engaged in research in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Insider: Apple will remove the word “Hi” from the trigger phrase Siri

Apple plans remove the word “Hello” from the trigger phrase of the Siri voice assistant.

According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, engineers have been working on this change for several months. Teaching Siri to understand a single word to wake up is technically challenging, requiring significant AI training and basic engineering work, he added.

While Apple developers are testing the update on employees. One specific challenge is teaching Siri to understand an activation word in multiple dialects and accents.

The update is expected to arrive in 2023 or 2024.

Amazon introduced a new warehouse robot

Amazon at Delivering the Future introduced Sparrow robotic arm for repetitive warehouse tasks.

The device uses computer vision and artificial intelligence to move goods before they are packed and shipped to customers. The robot can pick up and sort objects of various shapes and sizes.

According to the company, the system is able to identify about 65% of Amazon’s inventory.

GitHub showed a voice assistant for writing code

The GitHub service has launched testing of a voice assistant for the AI system for automatically writing program code Copilot.

The technology is being developed by a Next team of engineers and researchers. According to them, the assistant can already write and edit a piece of code, switch to another method, run the program and explain what a particular line does.

The project is an experiment and it is not yet known whether the voice assistant will become a full-fledged product.

Waymo allowed to charge for drone delivery in California

California authorities (USA) allowed Waymo to charge for driverless robo-vehicles in San Francisco.

The state Department of Motor Vehicles has updated the commercial use of drones for autonomous and guided operations. Waymo will now be able to charge fees for operating robocars without a security driver behind the wheel for services like food and grocery delivery.

To commercially deploy fully self-driving taxis, the company must obtain approval from the California Public Service Commission.

Artificial intelligence will help Ukrainians find work

In Ukraine involve AI to help citizens find jobs and start businesses.

According to representatives of the State Employment Center, the technology will “quickly and accurately” provide job seekers with a pool of professions based on their specified abilities and flexible skills that employers pay the most attention to when hiring.

Also, the system will automatically generate an interactive resume. The department said that it will give applicants an advantage among applicants, as it will contain all the information a recruiter needs.

When identifying a propensity to run their own business, AI will offer a person to undergo comprehensive entrepreneurship training. Upon completion of the course, the system will generate a personalized certificate with a unique number.

Research: AI will help speed up the detection of nuclear threats

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) experts considerthat artificial intelligence can accelerate the detection of nuclear threats.

According to PNNL report, data analysis and machine learning techniques can help experts IAEA expose potential malicious activity. To this end, researchers are developing several AI projects. Among them:

  • a machine learning model for detecting leaks of nuclear materials at reprocessing plants;
  • a system based on the Google BERT language algorithm, capable of analyzing text and identifying signs of the spread of atomic weapons;
  • a tool that can determine the origin of nuclear materials from images.

According to PNNL, these algorithms can already optimize the process of detecting atomic threats. However, it will be some time before agencies like the IAEA use AI in their work, the researchers added.

Boston Dynamics celebrates its 30th anniversary

Boston Dynamics has published a video showing the development of robotics over the past 30 years.

The video begins with a demonstration of a new generation of dynamic one-legged, bipedal, and quadrupedal devices created by the company’s founders at Carnegie Mellon University (1980-1986) and MIT (1987-1995). The video also shows the evolution of Spot, Atlas and other robots.

According to Boston Dynamics, the video celebrates 30 years of innovation, research and collaboration.

New version of Midjourney released

Service for generating images on a text query Midjourney updated up to the fourth edition.

According to the founder of the project, David Holtz, the algorithm received a new code base, architecture and “knowledge”, including about locations and creatures. The neural network can correctly recognize fine details, understand more complex clues, and process scenes with multiple objects and characters.

Also, the developers have improved the function of mixing two pictures. Midjourney now composes images better, combining colors, composition, looks and styles in a 50/50 ratio.

Holtz noted that since Midjourney V4 can generate more realistic illustrations, moderators will begin to enforce community rules more strictly.

Scientists have created an algorithm to improve night photos

Researchers at UCLA developed VEViD AI algorithm for photo enhancement.

The system emulates physical processes and can correct low-contrast or low-light images. VEViD allows neural networks trained on high-quality images to recognize objects in photos taken at night without retraining.

According to the researchers, the algorithm is high-performance, interpretable, and does not require labeled data for training. It can be used for image processing in the tasks of unmanned driving, night observation and space exploration.

The most important AI deals of the last week
