The Israeli army has deployed an extensive facial recognition system to track Palestinians on West Bank… About it The Washington Post told the former military.
Six soldiers announced the Blue Wolf smartphone app. With its help, the military takes pictures of the Palestinians and, if it coincides, detains or arrests the person.
The Blue Wolf Database is an abbreviated version of another Wolf Pack system that contains information about every Palestinian in the West Bank, including photographs, family ties, and “danger level to others”.
The army has populated the database with thousands of images of Palestinians over the past two years and has even run “contests” in which soldiers are awarded for the most photographs taken.
“The database is essentially Facebook for the Palestinians,” said one former soldier.
The Israeli military has also installed cameras throughout the city. Hebronscanning Palestinian faces and identifying them for soldiers at checkpoints. A number of devices, some of which are aimed at people’s homes, provide 24/7 real-time surveillance.
According to one soldier and four local residents, biometric identification is used in Hebron without notification or consent.
The army argued for the need to deploy a surveillance system in order to prevent terrorism, the former military said. However, they found this system alarming:
“I would not feel comfortable if they were using it in the mall [моего родного города]… People are worried about being fingerprinted, but that is several times worse. “
We will remind, in November, Facebook announced the imminent abandonment of the face recognition system and the deletion of data associated with it.
In June, human rights activists reported that New York City police were able to track and identify citizens using 15,000 cameras.
In May, a Chinese programmer told reporters that the PRC authorities are testing an emotion recognition system on Uighurs at police stations in Xinjiang.
