Since December 2021, the Israeli authorities have confiscated 189 accounts on the Binance cryptocurrency exchange, allegedly linked to terrorist groups. ISIS and Hamas. Writes about it Reuters with reference to previously unpublished documents NBCTF.
According to themOn January 12, 2023, the agency temporarily seized two Islamic State-linked Binance accounts and their contents in order to “interfere” with the group and “weaken its ability to advance its goals.”
The NBCTF did not provide a specific amount of the arrested cryptocurrency and evidence of a connection with terrorists.
Most of the remaining accounts belonged to three Palestinian foreign exchange firms that the agency has identified as “terrorist organizations” for their alleged involvement in Hamas transfers.
In April NBCTF reported to seize more than 500,000 shekels ($137,870) from more than 80 Binance accounts owned by three Gaza-based companies: Al Mutahadun For Exchange, Dubai Company for Exchange and Al Wefaq Co. For exchange.
The document says that the accounts were the property of “terrorist organizations” or were used to commit “serious terrorist crimes.”
Israeli law allows the country’s defense minister to order the seizure and confiscation of terrorist-related assets, in accordance with the decision of the Israeli ministry.
IN public response In response to the Reuters article, Binance representatives noted that attackers do not register accounts in the names of their criminal enterprises.
“Our team cooperates with law enforcement agencies and uses information only available to them to identify individuals managing the accounts of illegal organizations,” they added.
According to a Reuters investigation last year, Binance repeatedly withheld information from regulators, neglected procedures KYC and acted contrary to the recommendations of its own compliance department.
Agency analysts estimate that since 2017, the exchange has processed more than $10 billion worth of payments for criminals and sanctioned companies. Binance representatives disputed the articles at the time, calling the calculations inaccurate and descriptions of compliance controls “outdated.”
Recall that in March, HAPI Labs analysts stated that almost 96% of donations for the Russian army went through Binance. In their opinion, this indicates a non-compliance by the trading platform AML-procedures.
