Google is in talks to invest at least $200 million in AI startup Cohere, which develops natural speech processing solutions. Writes about it The Wall Street Journal.

Cohere has also held talks with chip maker Nvidia about possible strategic investments, the source said. Contacts between representatives of both companies are still ongoing, the sources added.

Google and Nvidia declined to comment. The startup also did not respond to journalists’ inquiries.

Cohere was founded in 2019 and is based in Toronto. The company creates natural language processing software that developers can use to build business applications like chatbots or voice assistants.

In November 2021, Cohere announced a multi-year partnership with Google. The tech giant gave the startup access to the cloud resources the startup needs to train AI models.

Journalists have previously reported on a potential multi-million dollar deal between Microsoft and OpenAI. The companies have been cooperating for many years.

Tech giants’ upcoming investments in startups and independent AI labs signal increased competition in this area, experts say.

Recall that in October, Texas authorities filed a lawsuit against Google in connection with the collection and use of user biometric data without consent.

In September, the tech giant announced plans to update the Speech Services text-to-speech engine on Android devices.

That same month, Google halved its experimental unit, Area 120, and refocused the group on AI projects.
