The deal closed two months ago, the source said, but was not publicly announced. Some of Alter’s top executives have updated their LinkedIn profiles to indicate they are joining Google without confirming the acquisition.

A spokesman for the tech giant confirmed that the company had bought Alter. He declined to comment on the terms of the deal.

Google is looking to use Alter to improve and expand its content offerings, as well as increase competition from TikTok, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Alter is headquartered in the Czech Republic and the USA. The startup was founded in 2017 under the name Facemoji.

The platform offered plug-and-play technology to help game and app developers add avatar systems to their programs. The startup received $3 million in seed funding from Play Ventures, Roosh Ventures and Twitter.

Facemoji was later renamed to Alter.

Recall that in October the media reported that Google was in talks to invest at least $ 200 million in AI startup Cohere.
