Mining company Marathon Digital Holdings and non-profit organization Brink announced on the launch of a $1 million funding program to support Bitcoin Core developers.
Brink is a foundation that distributes grants and interacts with sponsors. It was founded by bitcoin developers John Newbery and Mike Schmidt.
According to the agreements, Marathon undertook to match all received donations from third parties in equal proportion during 2023. During the Bitcoin 2023 conference from May 18 to May 21, this ratio will be 2:1. In total, the company will allocate $500,000 for these purposes,
“We have historically focused on supporting bitcoin by adding hashrate. The company is now helping those who maintain the open source protocol by contributing to Brink.” said Fred Thiel, CEO of Marathon.
Recall that in July 2022, one of the main developers of Bitcoin Core, Peter Welle, requested an exception for direct access to the software of the first cryptocurrency.
Nine months earlier, his colleague Jonas Schnelli left the project due to a shift in priorities and “increased legal risks associated with writing bitcoin code.”
