- He made up news and commercialized it on Baijiahao
- The criminal used ChatGPT to generate content
- He faces up to 5 years in prison
In Gansu Province, China, police have arrested a man for spreading fake news about a train wreck for profit. The suspect used ChatGPT to generate and host content on the Baijiahao platform.
The defendant’s name is believed to be Hong Moody. He was allegedly an employee of a small media company in Shenzhen. A man used ChatGPT to generate news about a train wreck.
It said that the train went off the tracks and crashed into a construction site, killing 9 people. Hong posted a post from multiple accounts. In total, this fake received more than 15 thousand “clicks”.
Thus, the criminal wanted to commercialize the content. By his actions, he violated several provisions of the decree “On Quarrels and Provoking Troubles” at once.
This law was adopted in January this year. It is aimed primarily at combating cybercrime, harassment and fakes in social networks. The maximum penalty for violating this provision is 5 years in prison.
“He just made up news, pumped traffic and made a profit” – leads comment of one of the users of the platform SCMP log.
This is the first arrest in China, and possibly in the world, in a case related to ChatGPT. And although this technology appeared relatively recently, there are quite a few cases of fakes being spread through a chatbot.
So, for example, earlier we talked about the fact that unknown “ill-wishers” from the Congress used ChatGPT to “denigrate” Binance and Changpeng Zhao personally.
