
Fast food chain KFC sent out a push notification to customers in Germany urging them to “treat yourself to crispy chicken” on the anniversary of Kristallnacht. Writes about it The Verge.
“Kristallnacht” or “Night of Broken Windows” is a brutally coordinated anti-Semitic the Nazi attack that took place on November 9–10, 1938. Many customers expressed outrage.
According to BBCan hour after that, the company sent out push notifications with an apology.
“Sorry, we made a mistake that caused our system to send an invalid and inappropriate message through the network application. We are very sorry and we will immediately check all internal processes [KFC]so that this doesn’t happen again. Please excuse this mistake,” the letter reads.
In a statement to the publication Newsweek The management of the fast food chain accused a semi-automated content creation system linked to the calendar of national holidays and memorable dates of sending offensive push notifications.
“In this case, our internal review process was not properly followed, resulting in an unapproved message being circulated,” the company said.
KFC also added that they suspended the exchange of data between applications to study the operation of the system and prevent such problems.
Recall that in August, Meta introduced the Blenderbot 3 chat bot with 175 billion parameters. Less than a week after the release, the system was accused of anti-Semitism and dissatisfaction with the social network Facebook.
