The Israeli army has deployed artificial intelligence weapons on a watchtower aimed at the Al-Arub refugee camp in the West Bank. Writes about it euronews.

A 19-year-old resident of the Kamal Abu Khishesh camp fears that an autonomous system with a target tracking function could harm children.

“[Оружие] very fast, even faster than soldiers […]. The tear gas grenades he fires can reach the end of the camp. I have seen this several times,” he said.

The developer of the Smart Shooter system said that the purpose of autonomous weapons is to protect soldiers and civilians by improving the accuracy of hitting the right target.

“Usually a terrorist is among people whom we do not want to harm. We allow the soldier to view the fire control system so that he can verify the legality of the target being hit, ”said Michal Mor, CEO of the company.

She added that the gun accompanies the target only at the discretion of the person. AI does not determine on its own who to shoot and who not:

“None of the bystanders can be hit by a weapon.”

The Israeli army said that autonomous guns are regulated by law. They reminded that they do not use live ammunition. Soldiers can only use tear gas, stun grenades and sponge bullets.

Human rights activists expressed concern about the “digital dehumanization of weapons systems.”

“When you combine technology that takes away the human judgment that police need, it creates a complex situation under international law,” said Omar Shakir, director of Israel and Palestine at Human Rights Watch.

Recall that in September it became known that the Israeli army deployed an AI turret at one of the checkpoints in Hebron (West Bank).
