The Instagram platform has launched an artificial intelligence function in the UK to check the age of teenagers from video selfies. Writes about it Gizmodo.

The company has been testing the tool since June 2022. The technology was developed by the British company Yoti.
Age verification applies to underage users who attempt to change their age in their account settings. The system will ask the profile owner to be verified with a video selfie. Alternatively, the user can send a photo of their ID or ask an adult to verify their age.
According to Yoti, the system in 99.65% of cases defines 13-17-year-olds as persons under the age of 23.
The company claims that their technology is different from the classic face recognition. Instead, the system analyzes the user’s facial features.
“This is not “face recognition” […]. This is simply a determination of whether there is something similar to a human face in the captured image, ”the company said.
Julie Dawson, director of policy and regulation at Yoti, said proof of age online is a “complex industry issue.” However, the face scoring tool strikes a balance between efficiency and privacy, she says.
“We created it to give everyone a secure way to verify their age without sharing their name or identification. This technology may allow minors to access age-appropriate content,” Dawson said.
Instagram’s director of public policy, Tara Hopkins, said the new tools are a “major step” in protecting young users on their platform.
“We want everyone to work on Instagram according to their age, which means that we need to know how old they are – and this is a problem for our entire industry,” she added.
The video selfie age verification feature is already available to users in the US, Brazil, and India. The company plans to roll out the technology to other regions in the near future.
Recall that in September, Meta began developing a system for recognizing nudity in photos sent to private messages on Instagram.
