US Department of Homeland Security reported on the formation of a new task force of five federal law enforcement agencies, which will investigate crimes related to cryptocurrency and the dark web.
The Memorandum of Mutual Assistance was signed by the Arizona National Security Investigation Service, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Postal Inspection Service.
According to the Ministry, the departments have been cooperating since 2017 and have jointly solved many high-profile cases related to the darknet.
According to the statement, the main goal of the initiative is to ensure “closer cooperation, increase resources, and disrupt and eliminate criminal organizations that use new technologies.”
In the early stages, the target group will be limited to the jurisdiction of the state of Arizona.
“Criminals have long been trying to launder the proceeds of their illegal activities through a variety of means, and technology is enabling this on a massive scale. As these attackers become more sophisticated, law enforcement tools, resources and intelligence must adapt,” the Ministry of National Security said.
In February 2022, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation formed a unit focused on analyzing on-chain activity in decentralized networks.
In October, Interpol also created a team to investigate cases involving digital assets. The new structure will help law enforcement officers of different countries in the fight against cryptocrimes.
