International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) plans to suspend recruitment for “back office” positions that could potentially be automated using artificial intelligence (AI).
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna explained in an interview with Bloomberg on May 1 that many “back office” jobs, such as those in HR and accounting, are likely to be the first to be automated with AI.
The IBM boss added that he could “easily” see 30% of those positions be replaced by artificial intelligence over a five-year period.

IBM has 282,000 employees globally, according to LinkedIn, and about 26,000 non-customer employees according to Bloomberg, meaning that about 7,800 jobs could be outsourced to artificial intelligence.
