IBM introduced watsonx AI platform for business

Artificial intelligence: news and articles

IBM has launched the watsonx AI and data management platform to help companies integrate AI into their business. Writes about it Reuters.

According to the announcement, companies can use watsonx to train and deploy AI algorithms, automatically generate code, and use various large language models.

The platform consists of three main components:

  • watsonx.ai for creating new base models, generative AI and machine learning;
  • watsonx.data, which provides the flexibility and performance of the data warehouse;
  • watsonx.governance to create AI workflows built with transparency in mind.

The platform’s launch comes more than a decade after IBM’s Watson program brought attention to winning the game show Jeopardy. Back then, the tech giant reported that software could “learn” and process human language. But the high cost of development has made it difficult for companies to use it.

However, cheaper development of artificial intelligence models increases the chances of success for IBM, said CEO Arvind Krishna.

“When something becomes 100 times cheaper, it really creates a completely different appeal. The first hurdle to developing a model is high, but once you do that, tailoring it for hundreds or thousands of different tasks is easy and can be done by a non-specialist,” he said.

Krishna added that AI could cut certain jobs in IBM’s back office in the coming years.

“This does not mean that overall employment is decreasing,” he said.

According to Krishna, this provides an opportunity to invest much more in value-creating activities.

“We have brought in more people than we have laid off because we are hiring in areas where demand from our customers is much higher,” said the head of the corporation.

He added that IBM is also leveraging a more open ecosystem and partnering with open source creators like Hugging Face.

Recall that in May, Krishna announced the suspension of hiring for positions that could potentially be replaced by AI.
