OpenAI believes that the vast majority of US workers automate some of their tasks to some extent using GPT models. About it says in a joint study by the company and the University of Pennsylvania.

Experts say that large language models will affect 10% of the tasks of 80% of Americans. For 19% of employees, the figure will be at least 50%, they added.

The study says that the GPT has a greater impact on high-wage occupations, while extending to almost all industries. According to scientists, large language models are general-purpose technologies. They compared their appearance to the invention of the steam engine or the printing press.

The researchers used the O*NET database containing a list of 1016 occupations with standardized descriptions. The experts and GPT-4 then annotated the tasks associated with each position.

After that, they tried to determine where the model can save time in each profession by at least 50% without losing the quality of work.

“The importance of science and critical thinking skills is highly negatively related to exposure [GPT]. Occupations that require these skills are less likely to be affected by modern language models,” the researchers write.

The paper also states that knowledge of programming and writing, on the contrary, demonstrate a strong positive relationship. Scientists suggest that such activities are more influenced by language patterns.

Occupations with the highest impact include:

  • mathematicians;
  • tax inspectors;
  • writers;
  • web designers;
  • accountants;
  • journalists;
  • legal secretaries.

Occupations that are less affected by the GPT include graphic designers, search engine marketers, and financial managers.

The researchers also listed general expectations for the impact of large language models on various industries. According to them, the spread of GPT will most affect data processing services, publishing and insurance companies. The least impact is on food production, wood products and ancillary activities for agriculture and forestry.

Experts acknowledge that the study has limitations. According to them, the annotators were familiar with the capabilities of the models and did not belong to some of the professions being measured.

Another limitation is the sensitivity of GPT-4 to the wording and composition of the prompt. Also, the algorithm is prone to inventing information.

Nevertheless, scientists are confident that the impact of large language models will be comprehensive.

“Their growing economic impact will continue and increase even if we stop the development of new features today,” the researchers said.

Recall that in March, OpenAI introduced GPT-4.

In the same month, CEO Sam Altman said that artificial intelligence will radically change “accustomed society.”
