The head of the department expressed his concerns during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Ray said Beijing’s AI ambitions are built on the sheer amount of inventions and sensitive data “that they’ve stolen over the years.”
The official believes that if China is not stopped, it will be able to use the technology for hacking operations, theft of intellectual property and repression.
“This is something that worries us deeply. I think everyone here should be deeply concerned,” he said.
Ray also argues that China’s AI program is “not limited to the rule of law.”
“AI is a classic example of a technology that I react to the same way every time. I think, “Wow, can we do this?” And then: “Oh God, they can do it,” he shared.
Earlier, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt warned about the decline in the technological superiority of the United States over China.
Recall that in October 2022, US congressmen asked to check unmanned driving technologies imported from China for threats to national security.
In the same month, the administration of US President Joe Biden imposed restrictions on the supply of AI chips to China.
In September, a panel of experts released a forecast that by 2030, China will seize global technological leadership from the United States and allies.
