The developers of the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) announced that the service will support .box web domains that will be routed DNS for Web2 browsers.

“.box will be the first native DNS routable top-level domain on the blockchain,” explained ENS co-founder Nick Johnson.
Registration and transfer of the domain in the .box zone will be carried out on Ethereum. The owner of the linked NFT will be the owner of the ENS and DNS names.

The solution is implemented through the My.Box project, which will start work in September. Users can register for early access to the service. A number of names are already reserved.
According to project founder Josh Brandley, the team has developed a domain tokenization mechanism. In addition, it is supposed to be deployed on the L2-level of Ethereum, which implies a minimum gas fee.
In a response to a user comment, Johnson acknowledged that a .box name would not have the same censorship resistance as an ENS address.
