The US Department of Commerce has revoked export privileges for a period of 10 years for former Ethereum Foundation researcher Virgil Griffith. About it says on the website of the department.

The authorities justified the decision on the provisions of the Export Control Reform Law, according to which such measures are applied to those who violate sanctions.

Until April 12, 2032, Griffith will not be able to directly or indirectly engage in any transactions involving goods, software, or technology that fall under the jurisdiction of US export regulations.

In April 2019, the developer attended a blockchain conference in Pyongyang. He was arrested in November of the same year and accused of providing North Korea with information about the use of cryptocurrencies to circumvent US sanctions and money laundering during the event.

The media also reported that he told colleagues about plans to supply mining equipment to North Korea.

In January 2020, Griffith was released on bail on $1 million of his sister’s and parents’ estate. He pleaded not guilty the same month.

In July 2021, the developer violated bail and was taken into custody again. He later pleaded guilty.

Recall that in April 2022, the court sentenced Griffith to five years in prison and a fine of $100,000.
