Cryplogger AI collected the most important news from the world of AI over the past week.
- Meta warns employees of ‘coming difficulties’
- Italy will finance projects in the fields of AI and blockchain for 45 million euros.
- FIFA is using AI to determine offsides at the upcoming World Cup.
- GPT-3 has written a scientific paper about himself.
- Elon Musk announced the need to regulate general AI.
- Scientists have created a generator of three-dimensional images.
- The most important transactions in the field of AI.
Company Meta warned employees about “hard times”. The tech giant also described the priorities and problems of the company in the future.
Chief Product Officer Chris Cox said that Meta was facing financial difficulties due to privacy policy changes and macroeconomic pressures. Employees need to “perform flawlessly” without the expectation of a huge influx of new engineers and budgets, he added.
The top executive highlighted six areas in which the tech giant should increase investment: the metaverse, AI, messaging, Reels promotion, monetization, and compliance with new privacy requirements.
The company also needs to five times its data center GPUs to compete with TikTok, Cox said.
Italy will allocate 45 million euros to AI and blockchain developers
Government of Italy highlight 45 million euros to subsidize projects related to AI, the Internet of Things and blockchain. Applications for funding will begin to be accepted from September 21, 2022.
The government noted that developers of socially significant projects such as education, agriculture and healthcare can receive grants.
Against Tesla launched a new investigation
US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched investigation of two fatal Tesla crashes.
One of the incidents involved the deaths of two Florida residents on July 6, 2022. According to the Highway Patrol, the car crashed into the back of a stationary tractor-trailer parked in a truck stop. The driver and passenger were killed.
A Highway Patrol spokesman noted that it is not yet known whether the autopilot was activated at the time of the collision.
FIFA uses AI to detect offsides
International Football Federation (FIFA) involves artificial intelligence to detect offsides at the 2022 FIFA World Cup games in Qatar.
According to the organization, the system includes a sensor in the ball and 12 cameras on the roof of the stadium. Also, thanks to machine learning, video sensors will be able to track 29 points on the player’s body.
The collected data will allow the system to fix offside “within a few seconds.” In case of violation, the program will transfer the information to FIFA representatives, who will notify the referee on the field.
The organization emphasized that the system is designed to help make “faster and more accurate decisions”, and not replace a person.
Elon Musk: General AI needs regulation
American businessman Elon Musk believes that general artificial intelligence needs to be regulated.
In an interview for the Getting Stoned podcast, the businessman said that while maintaining the current progress, humanity will soon be able to create a digital intelligence that surpasses the human in every way.
He added that general AI potentially carries public safety risks. Therefore, the technology should be subject to regulatory scrutiny, Musk said.
Korean police will increase the role of robots and algorithms in protecting law and order
By 2050, South Korean law enforcement plans to engage robotic dog, unmanned patrols and artificial intelligence.
According to the National Police Agency (NPA), autonomous devices will help maintain order on the streets. AI technologies will ensure the mobility of law enforcement officers, experts say.
The NPA added that the innovations will help law enforcement agencies adapt to the conditions of a changing world, and their main goal will be to reduce the dependence of the police on the people.
Scientists have created an AI tool to improve mental health
Startup Deep Longevity in collaboration with Harvard Medical School developed artificial intelligence to improve mental health.
The algorithm is based on two models. The first is a set of neural networks that predicts the chronological age and psychological well-being of respondents in 10 years based on survey data. This model depicts the trajectories of the human mind as it ages.
The second is a self-organizing map created as the basis for a mental health recommendation system. This algorithm divides respondents into clusters depending on their likelihood of developing depression and determines the shortest path to the mental stability cluster.
Deep Longevity has also released a free web applicationwhich allows users to take a psychological test and receive a report with ideas to improve their mental well-being in the long term.
GPT-3 wrote a scientific paper about himself
GPT-3 text generator wrote academic paper about yourself. Scientists sent the “work” for review in one of the scientific journals.
Swedish researcher Almira Osmanovich Tunstrem asked the algorithm to write a 500-word scientific article about GPT-3, as well as add links and quotes to the text. Two hours later, the system completed the document, putting the verified citations in the right places and in the right context, she said.
Tunström suggested that the experiment would change the system of funding the academic community, depending on the number of publications. According to her, the AI assistant will be able to generate a new article every day.
Scientists have presented an algorithm for generating three-dimensional images
Researchers at Stanford developed EG3D artificial intelligence model that generates high resolution random images of faces and other objects in 3D space.
Engineers have added an additional component to the generative adversarial network that converts images to 3D.
To edit photos created by EG3D, another team of researchers developed the GiraffeHD machine learning model. According to the engineers, both algorithms demonstrated high performance even on weak laptops.
An enthusiast created an AI manipulator that shoots using voice commands
American streamer Dylan Beck, aka Rudeism, developed AI controller for Apex Legends.
The device fires shots using the voice commands “brrrrr” and “bang-bang”, and aims thanks to a special glove.
As a basis for the controller, the modder used a single-board Arduino system, with a microphone and a motion sensor attached to the arm.
The most important AI deals of the last week
From July 3 to July 9, 2022, AI startups raised over $90 million. Here are the most interesting transactions.
- Klang Games attracted $41 million to create a virtual world with creatures endowed with artificial intelligence.
- Startup Celus using AI to automate PCB design collected $25.6 million
- AI chip maker Rebellions received $22.8 million
