The developer of the infamous Clearview AI face recognition system will be able to obtain a patent for its technology. Writes about it Politico…

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has authorized the company to register the system. To do this, Clearview AI only needs to pay an administration fee.

V patent application company describes in detail the use of a “web scanner” to acquire images. It is noted that “online photographs associated with a person’s account can help create additional records of facial recognition data points,” which can then be used for a machine learning algorithm.

The company’s CEO, Joan Ton-Tet, said it was the first facial recognition patent linked to “large-scale Internet data.” He added that the service is intended exclusively for government agencies and the company does not intend to sell services to other clients.

Clearview AI builds a face recognition database using photos of people from social media. In January 2020, the company drew attention to an investigation by The New York Times. The journalists found out that the face recognition system was used not only by hundreds of law enforcement departments in the United States, but also by private companies, including those outside the United States.

Recall that in November, Clearview AI technology entered the top ten most accurate face recognition systems.

Ton-Tet said in October that the service’s database had grown to 10 billion processed images.

In July, Clearview AI raised $ 30 million in a Series B round.
