American startup Clearview AI plans to expand its facial recognition services beyond law enforcement to banks and the education system. Writes about it The Register.

“Clearview AI is interested in using technology as a way to prevent crime and financial fraud. Facial recognition is already being used to unlock the phone, provide access to buildings, verify identity, and even for payments,” said CEO Hoan Ton-Tet.

The company is providing its technology without a large database of more than 20 billion images through Clearview Consent to vendors of visitor management software, he said. Some of them provide services in schools, he added.

Ton-Tet believes facial recognition can be used to prevent identity theft and fraud.

“For example, before a large banking transaction, it can be useful to perform facial recognition of the account holder to make sure that the money is not stolen,” he said.

Recall that in May, the UK Information Commissioner’s Office fined Clearview AI $9.5 million and ordered the company to remove the available information about citizens.

That same month, the startup agreed to suspend the sale of the biometric database to private firms in the US.

In November 2021, Clearview AI ranked among the top 10 most accurate facial recognition systems.
