OpenAI announced that it has met the requirements of Italian regulators, which allowed ChatGPT to resume operation in the country.

we’re excited chatgpt is available in 🇮🇹 again!

“ChatGPT is available again for our users in Italy. We welcome their return and remain committed to protecting privacy.” statement OpenAI for Associated Press.

To resolve the claims of the regulator, the developers have added privacy controls to ChatGPT. The settings make it possible to disable chat histories, which prevents OpenAI from using them in training datasets.

According to TechCrunch, users in Italy now see a pop-up asking them to verify their legal age. If a site visitor is between the ages of 13 and 17, they must provide the consent of a parent or guardian to use ChatGPT.

The Italian data protection authority welcomed the measures implemented. However, the regulator urged the company to comply with other requirements.

“This refers to the introduction of an age verification system, a campaign to inform Italians about what has happened, as well as their right to opt out of processing personal data for learning algorithms,” the statement said.

The watchdog is hopeful that the startup will continue efforts to comply with the GDPR.

“Italian [регулятор] will continue its fact-finding activities with respect to OpenAI, also under the auspices of the ad hoc task force established by the European Data Protection Board,” the conclusion reads.

Recall that at the end of March, the Italian authorities ordered to block ChatGPT due to a possible violation of data confidentiality.

The companies were given 20 days to resolve the issue. Otherwise, she could be fined 20 million euros or 4% of the annual turnover.

In April, a number of European regulators allowed the introduction of similar measures against the chatbot, and the Canadian authorities launched a special check.

In the same month, OpenAI proposed measures to address the data privacy issues that caused ChatGPT’s temporary ban in Italy.
