In March 2022, the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange will close the accounts of residents of the Canadian province of Ontario. The opportunities for these users on the platform are limited as early as January, the company said in a statement.

Bitfinex is making changes to the Services we provide to Ontario customers.

“Starting March 1, 2022, Ontario customers will no longer be able to access any services. Users with open positions in our peer-to-peer funding marketplace are advised to proceed with the withdrawal of funds from those positions immediately,” the notice reads.

According to the statement, the exchange will close user accounts with a zero balance. Ontario residents will also lose access to margin trading and lending markets. Probably, these restrictions have already entered into force.

All customers affected by the changes were advised to withdraw funds no later than March 1, 2022. The company did not give a reason for the decision.

Earlier, the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) banned two regulated cryptocurrency exchanges, Wealthsimple and Coinberry, from trading with the stablecoin Tether (USDT).

Recall that in August 2021, the OSC accused the OKEx exchange of violating the securities law. In the spring, the regulator made similar claims to companies affiliated with the KuCoin platform.

In June, Binance announced that it could no longer continue serving users from Ontario.
