A professor at Texas A&M University in Commerce accused students of cheating using artificial intelligence to write essays. Writes about it The Register.
Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Coordinator Jared Mumm checked the authenticity of the texts using ChatGPT. According to him, the tool marked some of the work as created by the machine.
The situation led to a freezing of estimates and further investigation. The suspected students confessed to using AI to write essays.
As a result, half of the academic group was temporarily denied the issuance of diplomas.
“I’ll give everyone an X in this course. I don’t rate AI bullshit,” Mumm told the students.
University officials have confirmed the use of the X score, which they say is a temporary measure while the investigation is underway.
The university noted that they excluded the possibility of cheating for some students, while others decided to submit a fresh essay for evaluation. At least one student admitted to using ChatGPT to complete the assignment.
“A&M at Commerce confirms that no student has failed class or been suspended from graduation due to this issue. Officials are investigating the incident and developing a policy to combat the misuse of AI technology,” the statement said.
The administration has also begun developing and implementing tools that identify AI texts in term papers.
A source familiar with the situation said the conflict was nearing its end. The university allegedly recognized the illegality of the teacher’s decision.
“This was completely out of protocol and an inappropriate use of ChatGPT. Well, at least no one used foul language in the accusations,” he said.
According to experts, even advanced detectors of generated texts are not able to accurately recognize a fake.
“As large language models improve to mimic people, the best possible detector will achieve an accuracy of almost 50%,” said Vinu Sankar Sadasivan, a graduate student at the University of Maryland.
He added that detectors can be fooled by paraphrasing the output of a large language model. Sadasivan called for learning to live with the fact that we may never be able to reliably distinguish AI text from human text.
“We should not use these detectors to make a final verdict,” he said.
Recall that in December 2022, a professor convicted students of forging an essay using ChatGPT.
In January, New York Public Schools banned the use of the chatbot on campus. Later, the largest universities in Australia joined them.
In the same month, OpenAI released a generated text detector. Soon ChatGPT was taught to bypass the limitations of the tool.
