Belgian artist Dries Deporter created The Follower, a project that tracks Instagram influencers on city security cameras.
The developer analyzed feeds from open cameras providing easy access to images of public places. For several weeks, he recorded online broadcasts from the streets and squares.
Deporter then uploaded all the Instagram photos tagged in the camera locations.
According to the artist, the system analyzed photos of influential bloggers with over 100,000 followers. The algorithm found them in captured places and allowed us to see the history of the photograph.
Deporter noted that the purpose of the project is to demonstrate the dangers of modern technologies.
Human rights activists said that The Follower is relatively harmless compared to the tools of tech giants.
“This is nothing compared to what commercial companies are already selling to the local governments of Kortrijk, Mechelen and many others,” wrote Dutch activist Matthias Dobbelaer-Velwarth.
Previously, Deporter developed a computer vision system that tracks politicians with a phone in their hands during meetings.
Recall that in August 2022, the French tax authorities told how 20,000 undeclared pools were discovered with the help of AI.
In February, activists discovered more than 25,000 video cameras located on the streets of New York. Most of them are installed in areas inhabited by ethnic minorities.
In January 2021, Amnesty International launched the Ban the Scan campaign to combat facial recognition in public places.
