According to most Americans, the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies could threaten the future of humanity. This is stated in a joint study Reuters and analytics firm Ipsos.

More than two-thirds of respondents are concerned about the negative consequences of the introduction of AI, and 61% believe that it can threaten civilization.

22% of those surveyed disagreed with this statement, and 17% were unable to answer the question.

The electorate of former US President Donald Trump expressed great concern. 70% of them agreed that AI could threaten humanity. Among the voters of Joe Biden, 60% of such people turned out to be.

Religiously, 32% of evangelicals “strongly agreed” that AI threatens civilization. 24% of representatives of other Christian denominations share the same opinion.

“This suggests that many Americans are worried about the negative effects of AI,” said Landon Klein, director of US policy at the Future of Life Institute.

According to him, the current situation is comparable to the beginning of the nuclear era, but now there is an opportunity to study public opinion and take the necessary measures.

Earlier, researchers from The Tech Oversight Project found that the majority of Americans support the efforts of the US Congress to curb AI.

Recall that in March, experts from Goldman Sachs said that generative AI threatens about 300 million jobs in developed countries.

That same month, OpenAI researchers assessed the impact of GPT models on the US labor market. According to them, the technology automates up to 10% of the tasks of 80% of Americans.

In May, billionaire investor Warren Buffett compared artificial intelligence to building an atomic bomb.
